See, what I've really wanted was a good way to read all the PDF documentation I have. But that's an issue with not only finding the right device, but the file format as well. PDFs just don't scale down well.

To be perfectly accurate, it's not really digital that doesn't understand/support famillies, but DRM. As far as I understand it (not very well considering I'm an Australian now in the UK...) US law would allow you to let your wife read the digital version of an eBook even if that meant making a copy, though it me be a gray area. DRM however makes it really quite black and white - you'd have to swap your eBook reader with your wife to let her read the book which is possible but really annoying since all your books go along with it.

The inheritance is also really about DRM and/or licensing too I suppose. Not that it's much of a difference either way except that DRM and licensing can be fixed whereas the digital medium is pretty much what it is.
